Living Life to the Fullest In Southwest Missouri

Lafayette House

Lafayette House

Guest contributor Louise Secker, Director of Community Development for Lafayette House, writes about her organization and how community members can get involved.

Lafayette House, located at 1809 Connor Avenue in Joplin, is a safe haven for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence, or who struggle with substance abuse.

There is real healing going on for these families, and when community volunteers come in to do jobs – big or small – it sends a message that the community cares about the struggles families are facing.

Love interacting with people?

Lafayette House has a volunteer greeter position – sitting at the reception desk, welcoming visitors, directing people to the right counseling office or meeting room, handing out visitor badges, or just providing a warm smile to the residents and staff who cross through the lobby all day.

Love children?

Lafayette House has an onsite child care center – with lots of craft projects to be done, books to be read, and babies to be rocked.

Prefer to work outside?

How about mowing the lawn, weeding, or planting some flowers in the mulch beds?

Right now the volunteers at Lafayette House range in age from 8 to 94…. So there is truly something for everyone.

Living Life to The Fullest!

Joplin MO LifeI love seeking out new experiences and finding places off the beaten path. I started Joplin MO Life in August 2013 as a way to share my discoveries with others in the Joplin community so that they can learn about the resources that exist right in their own backyards.

I have worked in education and event planning, and have always loved to write. I hold a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor's degree in marketing from Tulane University.
