We Are Joplin

Guest contributor Cameo Harrington, blogger for We Are Joplin, writes about the purpose of her organization.

In September of last year, a consortium of leading local businesses was formed with the task of promoting the many positive things happening in our community. They chose to work with Choice Marketing, a local advertising and public relations agency, to get those positive stories out in the world.

In December 2013, the blog was created as a landing point for many of those stories.  The group recognized the need for a continuous stream of information about the amazing things happening in our community.  WE all know what a great place Joplin is, but to many we are still just the “tornado town.”

As a (near) life-long resident of Joplin, it’s not hard for me to find positive stories about my hometown.  I’ve spent most of my professional life selling Joplin in one way or another. Past jobs include being an out-of-state recruiter for Missouri Southern, the director of sales for the Convention & Visitors Bureau and the assistant manager for Northpark Mall – all jobs where selling the community was as important as selling the organization. I am now a senior account executive at Choice Marketing, an active community volunteer, and one of the proudest Joplinites you will ever meet.

The great thing about is we also have the ability to bring in guest bloggers from our partners which allows for a more “up close and personal” view of many projects that people normally wouldn’t get to see. For instance, next week we get to tour the construction of the new High School and will be able to give people a sneak peak of what it will look like!

Joplin MO LifeI love seeking out new experiences and finding places off the beaten path. I started Joplin MO Life in August 2013 as a way to share my discoveries with others in the Joplin community so that they can learn about the resources that exist right in their own backyards.

I have worked in education and event planning, and have always loved to write. I hold a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor's degree in marketing from Tulane University.
